We can think of the team leader as a kind of first among equals. In the tradition of great leadership, the team leader identifies his or her success with the ability to help the team succeed. This does not mean that team success lies strictly on the shoulders of the leader. In fact, it is just the opposite-team success depends absolutely on the team as a whole. However, the leader acts as a inspirer, facilitator, and obstacle remover as the team does its work. What follows are some of the ways leaders do this.
Leader as a role model
The team leader is a role model for all the other members. This is the person who has been changed by management to be the official or nominal head of the team. As such, other team members will naturally look to the leader for cues as to the appropriate way to behave as a team member. understanding this, the team leader will go out of his or her way to cooperate and empower other members and share responsibility for executing team tasks. A common reason teams fail to come together and start performing is that the person chosen to lead the team continues to make decisions and direct the activities of others, as if it were the traditional superior-subordinate relationship. if team " leaders" act that way and send the message that the company doesn't really take this "team stuff" all that seriously, then other team members won't either.
Why Leadership Ability is required for team leaders ?
Some things a team leader can do to be a good role model include:
- Look to the team for answers rather than giving the answers.
- Never blame an individual when something goes wrong. Look at the team's processes and work with team members to learn from the experience and improve processes so similar breakdowns are less likely to be repeated.
- Don't sit by while the team is doing various tasks on the way to achieving its objectives. The leader should have specific tasks to do just like all other team members. the leader is also a team member.
- Be ready to work with any team member who needs assistance. Do this from the perspective of a helper.
- Always share credit for team successes with the entire team.
- Communicate openly and honestly to encourage that kind of communication among all group members.
